This guide focuses on when you attack someone, not being attacked you. I hope this guide will help you understand the success or shortcomings of combat.

Definitions

Attack Skill: The attack power that can be increased with skill points. On your profile page shows the base number added to the stat with your skill points, and the bonuses from collections. On the fight screens and inventory screen this number will include your Top Mafia Button man bonus and occasionally the highest attack skill boosts you have.

Defense Skill: The defense power that can be increased with skill points. On your profile page this will show the base number added to the stat with your skill points, and the bonuses from collections. On the fight screens and inventory screen this number will include your Top Mafia Bodyguard bonus and occasionally the highest defense skill boosts you have.

Tip: Some people follow the advice to keep both their attack skill and defense skill at least 2x their level each.

Mafia Attack Strength: This is the addition of the attack stat of all your weapons, vehicles, and armors up to 501 of each. This number only adds the attack value of items. Items are chosen from highest to lowest up to the number of mafia you have for each category. This number only increases when you add an item that is more powerful than one you already have, or if you add another mafia member who can use items you already possess. The number will usually increase by the difference between the item replaced and the item added.

Mafia Defense Strength: This is the addition of the defense stat of all your weapons, vehicles, and armors up to 501. This number only adds the defense value of the items. Items are chosen from highest to lowest up to the number of mafia you have for each category. This number only increases when you add an item that is more powerful than one you already have, or if you add another mafia member who can use items you already possess. The number will usually increase by the difference between the item replaced and the item added.

If I say attack or defense skill I’m talking skill points, if I say strength I am referring to the inventory/loot items. They need to be distinquished from each other.

The Stats Bar

From left to right Your attack skill (+buttonman and boost), Defense Skill (+bodyguard and boost), Mafia Size, Attack Strength, Defense Strength, then your best offense and defense items.

Tip: Your best offense and defense items are one each from left to right Weapon, Armor, Vehicle.

There are four messages for fight outcome: “You Lose”, “You were Outmanned”, “You were Outgunned” and “You were Outclassed”. These messages were meant to give us a clue as to why we lost.

FYI: These message are bugged and are not always to be trusted It is best to look at the results below and refer to what is in green and what is red.

Tip: Bodyguards and Buttonman bonuses for fighting appear to not be active.

When you attack someone it is your Mafia, Attack Skill and Attack Strength against the defenders Defense Skill, Defense Strength and Mafia Size. Nothing is combined. When attacking, you can see the defenders Mafia size and defense strength, their defense skill is unknown. How their attack skill and attack strength compared to your own should they try to counter attack is also unknown.

Outcome is dependent on all of these factors and not just one. For example just because you have a higher attack strength than the defender does not assure a win. There are additional factors, the difference in skill, Mafia Size, and any boosts available. There is always a chance that a person you beat in a fight can turn around and beat you in a fight as well.

Most outcomes below focus on equal mafia size. Depending on your strength and skill you may be able to defeat mafias of 100 or more above you. Though a higher mafia gives a player a significant advantage it is possible to lose to a lower sized mafia should your skill and strength not be up to par.

You Win! – Advantage in All three categories

The attacker has a higher attack skill, strength, and mafia size than the defender, it’s an easy win. The only way to lose this is to the bodyguard bonus. The chances of losing to the defender were they the attacker is slim unless they have a lopsided account where most of the skill points are in attack instead of defense.

You Win! – Advantage in attack strength (equal mafia).

The attacker has an approximately 8,000 point advantage in strength, while their skill is less than the defenders defense skill, The defender does not have quite enough skill to win. This kind of win is very common. It is also wide open to a counter attack. A player who you beat in this method could potentially have enough attack skill and strength to overcome your defenses, so don’t be too cocky!

You Win! – Advantage in attack skill (equal mafia).

The attacker has an unknown advantage in skill and just under 5,000 disadvantage in strength. Their skill makes up for the lesser strength. Again This kind of win is open to counterattack depending on the defenders total build.

You Lose! – Less strength and Skill (equal mafia).
May be Outclassed or Outgunned.

Basically the defender owns you. You will need to better both your inventory and skill to dream of beating this opponent in the future.

Hot Tip! Damage is calculated AFTER outcome. How much damage you deal or receive has no role in if you win or lose. Master Street thug and Associate for special items that affect damage. A friend helping in a losing fight will decrease damage received.

You Lose! – Less Strength (equal mafia).
Outgunned.

You spent all that time working on your skill, but you may be fighting with brass knuckles. Time to add some weapons to your wishlist or start doing the jobs with better loot. If you maintain your skill advantage, and you can get your strength within 1,000 on either side of their defense strength you have a chance to win. The Defender has a chance of turning the tables on you.

You Lose! – Less Skill (equal mafia).
Outclassed.

Okay. This is the outcome most of you have been waiting for. It is the #1 example of what causes someone to come exclaiming to the forums “WHY DID I LOSE? I’M OBVIOUSLY STRONGER”. Well take a seat students, I’m going to tell you why you aren’t stronger. It’s your attack skill. Sure, you may own the other player by 2,000 or more in strength, but if your mafia does not have the skill to use those weapons you will have your mafia’s butt handed to you. Gear will take you far, but it only so far. You need to eventually put some points into your attack so your mafia can utilize all those snazzy items you loot. You lost because your high attack strength was not enough to overcome the defenders high defense skill

At this point, the question may be asked, “But how can they have over 2,000 extra defense skill points to beat the 2,000 advantage I have in strength. The answer: They don’t need 2,000 defense SKILL points to over come you. Strength and Skill are not a 1:1 ratio in most cases. In some cases a single skill point could be worth 5, 10, 50, or even a 100 or more strength points. In cases of Low attack skill, the less advantage in strength means the less defense skill advantage needed to win.

So the question is “How do I win” The answer, by either increasing your skill until it’s green, or at least “closer” to their unknown skill, or by increasing your strength even more, whatever is easier for you. However remember what I said earlier. Gear will only get you so far, you need some skill as well. I sometimes find people in question here who are level 150, who claim to have 50 attack fighting against another 150. They have like 10,000 advantage in strength, but don’t understand that the defender may have 300 defense skill points, plenty to overcome various amounts of strength disadvantage.

I hope that that rounds out some concerns about fight outcomes.”

53 Attack, 23 Defense

Some of you will have blocked poker during your time on facebook, I was one of them. If you have then you’ll receive this message.

To unblock Poker:

1) Go to the account drop-down tab
2) Click Privacy Settings
3) Click Applications and Websites
4) Click Edit Blocked Applications
5) Scroll down to find Texas HoldEm and click Unblock. The apps are not in alphabetical order so use Ctrl-F to find it.

You need to get to Level 6 on Zynga’s Texas HoldEm poker. This can be done using two main tactics.

1) Folding

2) Playing Poker

Folding

1) When you first sign up, you’ll be given a load of free chips. This will generally be enough to fold your way up to Level 6. Each hand you sit in on as a player will gain you 1XP. Aim for the low stakes tables. Preferably where the blinds are 1/2 or 2/4.

2) Blinds are when chips are automatically put down for you at the beginning of the game. In every game there is one Small Blind and one Big Blind. Small blind puts down the first number and the big blind puts down second number (in a 1/2 game the SB will put down 1 chip and the BB puts down 2 chips).

3) Buy in for the maximum. On the 1/2 tables, max buy in is 40 chips and 800 chips on the 2/4 table. Buy in is number of chips you bring to the table when you sit down.

4) Fold every hand you get. On a buy-in of 40 chips, you can fold a minimum of 20 times without running out of chips. This amounts to 20+XP towards your goal. On a buy-in of 800 chips you can fold a minimum of 200 times before you run out of chips. This is 200+XP towards your goal of Level 6. For each hand you fold, you get 1XP.

5) Sit and wait, folding as you go. Bring a book, a paper, a drink, anything. Because if you’re a folder it will cost you a few hours of your life and it’ll be boring as hell. Just do something else at the same time. I recommend you play with the sound turned on so that when you hear the cards being passed out, you know to switch to poker for your next fold. You will have to sit in on 235 games to get to Level 6.

6) Bear with it. It’s frustrating but you’re doing this for the 53A Ace in the Sleeve.

Playing Poker

Now unlike real life, you can’t see the other players, you can’t see any tells and you can’t really try to bluff them which imo is half the fun of poker anyway. So there are 3 ways of doing it by playing.

1) Join a table and play every hand. You win some, you lose some. You’ll need a plentiful supply of chips since you’ll generally lose more than you win.

2) Join a table and play shrewedly. Fold every hand unless you are initially dealt a pair or you generally have a good feeling about the hand. If you have a good feeling, bet low until all the cards have been dealt then raise high on the final bet when you can see all 5 cards dealer has put on the table.

3) Join a table with only 1-2 other people on it. The games go faster.

The higher the table stakes, the higher the EXP you get for winning or folding. It is up to you how to play.

Getting Your Weapon

Once you reach level 6, a message will pop up saying that you’ve been awarded the Ace in the Sleeve in Mafia Wars. To receive this, go to Mafia Wars and click the Ace in the Sleeve promo on the MW Home tab. You will then receive the weapon.

A worker character puts virtually every single point into Energy with the purpose and hope of doing jobs and finishing the game while also providing Loot and Consumables to their Mafia. This type levels the fastest but is considerably the weakest in the fighting area with virtually no Attack or Defense and minimal Health.

The middleman takes a balanced approach. Each level putting 1 point into attack and defense, 1 point into Health, and 2 points into Energy, at the next level up: 1 point into attack and defense, 1 point into Energy and 2 points to Stamina (under the old 2 for 1 system) steadily building balanced character stats. Completing jobs adds points as do getting the achievements, which are distributed as seen fit

The Money Laundering and Daily Chance collection are also New York collections, but their pieces drop under special circumstances.
Street Thug
Vaulting this collection will give a permanent +1 to your energy skill. The re-vault bonus for the Diamond Flush collection is the Tripwire which is +10 defense boost.

Associate
Vaulting this collection will give a permanent +5 to your health skill. The re-vault bonus for the Heart Flush collection is the Cappuccino which is a -3 energy boost.

Solider

The solider tier has four collections to hunt down.
Vaulting this collection will give a permanent +3 to your defense skill. The re-vault bonus for the sculptures collection is an Alarm System which is a +15 Robbing Defense boost.
Vaulting this collection will give a permanent +2 to your attack skill. The re-vault bonus for the Poker Chips collection is the Bulldog which is a +18 Defense boost.
Vaulting this collection will give a permanent +3 to your attack skill. The re-vault bonus for the Club Flush collection is the Problem Solver which is a -5 energy boost.
Vaulting this collection will give a permanent +3 to your attack skill. The re-vault bonus for the Boxing collection is the Semi-pro Boxer which is a +15 Attack boost.

Enforcer

The Enforcer tier has three collections.

The Hitman tier has two collections.

Vaulting this collection will give a permanent +6 to your defense skill. The re-vault bonus for the ties collection is the Injunction which is a +25 Defense boost.

Capo

The Capo tier has 3 collections.
Vaulting this collection will give a permanent +6 to your energy skill. The re-vault bonus for the Paintings collection is the Motion Detector which is a +37 Robbing Defense boost.
Vaulting this collection will give a permanent +10 to your health skill. The re-vault bonus for the Cufflinks collection is the Corporate Muscle which is a +35 Attack boost.
Vaulting this collection will give a permanent +4 to your energy skill. The re-vault bonus for the Barber collection is the Shave & a Haircut a +30 Defense boost.

Consigliere
Vaulting this collection will give a permanent +7 to your energy skill. The re-vault bonus for the Great Race Horses collection is the Inside Tip which is a -16 Energy boost.

First, how to unblock the Mafia Wars application. This is for people who purposely or accidentally blocked the entire Mafia Wars app and want it back!

1. Click on Account (upper right corner)
2. Go to Privacy Settings
3. Click on Applications and Websites
4. Go to Edit Blocked Applications
5. Click Remove (next to Mafia Wars)

Second, how to make the Mafia Wars newsfeed return (unhidden)! This is for people who purposely or accidentally hid Mafia Wars from their news feed.

1. Go to your http://facebook.com/.
2. Click on “Top News”.
3. Scroll down to the bottom of the page.
4. Click on “Edit Options”.
5. Click on the one you have hidden (Mafia Wars).
6. Click on “Add to News Feed”.

The only silver lining here is that if you help, both you and your friend get the item after completing it within an hour.
The Collections
Strategy Tip: The S10 and Spy Drone are only +1 and +2 higher than the Lloyds Spectere in vehicle defense, where the Fox Hunter Rocket is +5 more than the Ubijica Assualt Rifle. These are very small advances over top free job loot. When you take into account that you can only get 1 of each, the increases in attack and defense strength is miniscule and will likely never be the difference between a fight lost or won. Don’t collect these thinking you are going to be drastically increasing your combat build. Completing these collections is for Bragging rights and serious collectors and Completist personalities only.

1. How can I ask for help?

Directly from the collections page, or from pop ups when you find items randomly

2. Can I only get these through jobs and helping?

That is the main way, but every single item in the collection can be added to your wishlist and can be exchanged within your mafia like other collection pieces and loot

3. I clicked to help a friend and I can’t find where I am supposed to go, it tells me nothing!

There is a bug in there. Go to each city in sequence until you receive the pop up telling you to help and start searching. Click start searching. if you still can not find the job, look in each tier until you see the binoculars and timer images next to the required job.

4. When I master a job that had a timer, the timer is gone and I have not yet found the item and I can’t seem to get the item!

This is apparently only a display bug and your chance to get the item within the “hour” is still active. If the timer disappears when you master a job with the timer, the job is still active even though the timer is not there for whatever time was left on the timer before it disappeared.

The War Method

1. You must be friends with the person you wish to add without using an invite.

2. Go to their facebook profile.

3. Search for a recent/active call for help in a war.

4. Click on help. Don’t worry about being late for the war – it doesn’t matter.

Look down the lists of the war for the player you just became facebook friends with. Next to their name should be a link called “Add to Mafia”

Click it and it’s done!

Forced Add

If the player does not have an active war help, we can recreate the link used there to add the player to your mafia.

1. Copy the above link.

2. Replace the facebook_id with the ID number of the players facebook profile between the quotes.

3. Go to the link and it’s done!

There are three classes that each player must choose from when they first start the game. Every class offers a reduced amount of recharge time to one of the three timers. Here are the classes:

Maniac: This class is generally for people who want to do more jobs. You get a 3 minute timer for energy as opposed to the 5 minutes you would otherwise get in another class. In addition, the Buttonman Top Mafia position is only available for Maniacs.

Mogul: In my opinion, the worst class. You get 5% more money from all jobs in any area. This is nearly useless as money is fairly easy to come by anyways. In addition, the Top Mafia Bagman position is only available for Moguls.

Fearless: This class is generally for people who want to brawl more. You get a 3 minute timer for stamina as opposed to the 5 minutes you would otherwise get in another class. In addition, the Top Mafia Wheelman position is only available for Fearless players.

Character class can be changed by the user by buying a preferred class for 15 Godfather points (or if you get a random event where you get a free change).
